What is it.
Information obtained from children and youth is often the sole piece of evidence in police investigations of child abuse. This framework identifies key forensic interviewing practices to ensure legally sound, trauma-informed information gathering methods. It offers practical guidance to build interviewer capacity and improve the quality and consistency of forensic interviews across jurisdictions.
How can it help me?
Currently, Canada does not have a national governing body or standardized qualifications for professionals conducting forensic interviews with children and youth. However, forensic interviewing is one of the ten national guidelines, and it is essential for CYACs to ensure that every child receives a high-quality interview experience.
For CYACs, strengthening interviewer capacity and implement quality assurance processes will protect interview integrity and uphold best practices. CYACs can use the framework to assess current practices, identify areas for improvement, and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of forensic interviewing to support consistent, high-quality service delivery.
