What is it.
While existing research has identified numerous risk factors associated with child sexual exploitation, less attention has been given to the cognitive and interpersonal processes that shape how youth understand and navigate their experiences. This study explores how female youth perceive and make sense of their experiences of sexual exploitation. Reports from children’s services workers in Quebec were examined to identify and describe the cognitive patterns observed among youth who have experienced sexual exploitation.
How can it help me?
Understanding the cognitive patterns and perceptions that shape how youth experience and interpret sexual exploitation will strengthen CYAC’s prevention and intervention strategies. Many youth who experience sexual exploitation do not identify themselves as victims. Youth will often minimize their experiences or struggle to recognize manipulation, coercion, and exploitation within their relationships, ultimately affecting their willingness to engage with CYAC staff and their multidisciplinary team members.
