Qu’est-ce que c’est ?

Virtual testimony allows children and youth to testify from a safe and child-friendly space instead of a courtroom. Although virtual testimony has been available for several decades, its use remains limited. This research article emphasizes the importance of virtual testimony as part of a trauma-informed approach when children and youth are required to testify in criminal court.

En quoi cela peut-il m’aider ?

The judicial process can be stressful for children, with the risk of re-traumatization. Some key challenges to using virtual testimony include finding the funding to set up dedicated spaces, ensuring equitable access to technology (especially in rural and remote areas), and waiting for a case that strongly supports the use of virtual testimony. However, CYACs with experience establishing dedicated spaces for virtual testimony recommend securing a champion within the judiciary or among Crown prosecutors. This individual or ‘champion’ would understand the purpose of virtual testimony and be able to advocate for it.

While virtual testimony is particularly beneficial for northern and remote communities, it is essential that CYACs invest in high quality, reliable audio and visual equipment. The value of collaboration, relationship building and awareness is an important consideration to the success of virtual testimony.
